Weekend Wonders

One match in and the dummies are already out of the pram - only joking. New season off to a flyer for all four teams - well nearly. NUVOC teams didn't quite manage the 4 and O in fact couldn't make 3 victories out of four... nope the club had to settle for 2 losses and 2 wins.

Match results Saturday 4 October

Men Div 1

NUVOC 3 v 0 Jets (25-21, 25-22, 25-21)
With an all new line up for both teams it was interesting to see the match unfold as it did. Jets screeched away to a commanding lead in the first set but kinda stalled half way thru and never really managed to regain that composure. New rules caused a wee bit of confusion (probably because no one's actually bothered to read up on them...) but all in all the game was played in reasonable spirit and reassuringly no handbags and only one yellow card - Grum was refereeing and it's tradition.

Men Div 2
NUVOC II 2 v 3 Beacon (23-25, 25-13, 23-25, 25-13, 13-15)
... it doesn't look pretty online and it didn't look took clever on court either..nuvoc were 8-1 down at the turn in the last set but we've not to talk about that. Well done to the chirpy chaps fae the north they did what they had to do which in essence was get the ball over the net and in court)

Men Div 3
NUVOC III 1 v 4 Lenzie (24-26, 25-22, 18-25, 14-25, 13-15)
Well it was all looking good on paper - New match ball was primed - Boys were up for it and then with a mighty woosh it all went Pete Tong. NUVOC dropped the first set without much resistance kicked off the dust to take the second and then proceeded to lose two players in quick succession (they had to go!) and the rest is history. There's a lesson to be learnt here somewhere.

Women Div 2
NUVOC 3 v 2 Dundee (25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 9-15)
...waiting for the match report on this one but I'm lead to believe that division 2 has thrown a couple of spanners in Dundee's works already and yes you do have to play all five sets. Anyway from what I can gather NUVOC were behind in most sets, came back, kicked ass and won a sterling victory. Good job.

heres the match report !!!

WE WON!!!! New team shout for the season seems to work!! (Still not sure what it was as I kept getting it wrong - but hey it worked!!!)- Did I mention WE WON!!

Jo and I also managed to deafen those left in the hall with our team chant/sing song at the end – again apologies to those present – will take singing lessons!

What a way to start the season! We had got through our first match officiating with the new rules and fast substitutions and then it was our turn! First thing we noticed was Dundee had a very tall player who you just knew was going to play in the middle!! Dave’s first tactic – don’t let them get a middle attack going!!!! Poor girl had a bit of a complex by the end of the match as our team not only called where the setter was but also where the ‘Tall Girl in the Middle’ was!

The First set was a bit of a blur as everyone got down to the business of playing and dusting off the game cobwebs. The starting six were Hannah and Emma, setter and off-setter, Jo and Rach through the middle and Zalina and Glenda in 4. Screaming from the bench (yes its true – it was that exciting a match!) were Dianne, Elin (recovering from flu) and our new signing Laura all ready to leap onto court via the special subs chair! And boy did we need them!

As usual we didn’t make things easy for ourselves and lulled Dundee into a false sense of security by giving them the first few points of the set before fighting back to win 25 - 23. This became a recurring theme throughout the game – we give them the first 7 or 8 points and then work really hard to win back the set!

There were definite moments when we thought Dave was going to explode on the sidelines when a few silly mistakes were made but overall we carried out his wishes as best we could! Serve to one, tip behind the block, hit cross-court, and don’t let them get a middle attack!!  Second set won!!!!

Dundee started to adapt to our cunning plans and it soon became obvious that we needed to adjust our play. That famous line was said– don’t serve on number 4, she can pass- obviously this then meant that we served at her until her magnetic effect started to wear off- about the same time as Dave shouted at us – “what the hell are you doing out there?” (3rd set wasn’t going too well –gave them too big a lead this time!)

Going into the 4th set we all knew we had to dig deep and find those energy reserves (I can recommend Dried Cranberries if anyone’s interested!) to bring this game home for NUVOC! We fought hard to not give them a lead but it didn’t work so in the end we had to play our wee socks off to get back into the game and win it! Elin came to our rescue with a stuff block against the tall girl in the middle to win the set and match! This is the point I mention again – WE WON!!!!!!

Highlights of the match are many; Zalina diving all over the place and slapping butts! Emma –what a great hit down the line at 4! Jo running and diving across the court from 2 to 4 to pick up a ball; Hannah setting me a lovely ball or two in the middle; Glenda for doing her magic on serving again and again and again! Laura for fitting in so well on her debut with NUVOC and not making us all feel too old!! Dianne for unleashing that powerful hit she tries to hide! And have to mentions Elin’s block just once more!

Special thanks to our supporters (although they forgot to use the pom poms!!!) Lucie and Kamilla – both hopefully going to be playing in the coming weeks!

Finally – thanks Dave – we will try to keep your 100% record going and do as you tell us!!! (Honest!)
