South Ayrshire 4 v 1 NUVOC Women

Road Trip - Road Trip - Road Trip - Road Trip - Road Trip!!!

It may not be the East to West Route 64 you find in the good old U.S. of A. but we like to think the M8 and M77 can be as memorable and challenging as its American counterpart!!
So we headed off after meeting at Chez Mickley early on Saturday morning (must mention there was no malt loaf to be seen - suppose the excuse of just arriving back from San Diego will be used here!!!) The size of the squad was so impressive (numbers not girth!) that the Glenda bus was unable to take us all – 10 players in all and Dave of course!! So we had to have overflow transportation for the trip to the West. (My wee car and Zalina on her own wee road trip with Alec!!!)
The IPOD was tuned in and the Road Trip started! Only at this point did I realise how my tunes were not deemed to be Girly enough! (All downloaded from my brothers’ computer you see!!) Although, the girls did discover a few songs I didn’t know I had in their search for more girl friendly tunes– BONUS! Think the Bus had sweets!
As we headed west – zipping along behind the Bus – the girls took in the glorious scenery, listened to the chat, joined in the gossip and wondered when they might get a cup of tea!!! Little did they know that we always leave a bit early- obviously in case there are hold ups on the road but mainly to ensure we have time to have a cup of tea in the local caff! Only it wasn’t a local caff now - it was a very modern and stylish café! Ooh la la! Excellent millionaires shortbread, carrot cake and toilets – was seriously thinking of moving in!
Enough of the Road Trip – lets get down to the nitty gritty and discuss the game. South Ayrshire have always been a useful team and we knew we’d have to bring our good game today. (yes we have more than one!)
Guess what? – we did our usual and gave them a head start – 2 sets this time though!! Got to stop being such a generous team! Wont go into too many details, especially about the second set, but we were struggling against there middle attack – very tall girls and a second tempo ball, and making too many mistakes!
Starting six in first set were Hannah, Emma, Elin, Rachel, Glenda and Zalina, with Lucie and Katie (making her debut no less!) coming on.
Second set we’re not talking about but starting team were Hannah, Roxanna, Rachel, Katie, Glenda and Zalina, with Emma and Lucie subbing on.
Ok - third set, starting with Emma, Roxanna, Rachel, Katie, Lucie and Glenda with Kamilla making her NUVOC debut too later in the set! We went out with a mission – we were going to win this one! The concentration levels went up, communication improved and we were able to put pressure on them, forcing mistakes and generally being quite good. The old faithful’s came into being- put the ball to one, behind the block and cover everything!!! A couple of blocks against their middle attack helped too! Set WON – in the bag as they say!
Roll on the fourth set – Emma, Roxanna, Rachel, Glenda, Lucie and Katie led the way. Kamilla and Elin running onto court as super subs when they were needed Aaaaarrrgggghhhhh – we let them get a lead – something ridiculous this time like 8 points and had to really fight hard to get back into the game – and we did – 23 –23 and all to play for – it wasn’t to be though, South Ayrshire won the set and match.
The fifth set saw Hannah, Roxanna, Elin, Katie, Lucie and Glenda take to the floor in a bid to win that final set. Again we gave them a head start and struggled to pull it back at this point.
We all felt a bit disheartened, as we knew it as well within our capabilities and grasp to have beaten this team. Back to some serious training this week to improve our strengths and eliminate our errors.
Beginning to think there’s bit of a conspiracy going on – to not allow the NUVOC women to have a shower after a game!!!  There was no water at Prestwick Academy (undergoing a refurb!!!) – not even to flush the loo!!! They had to ask to use the site portaloo for those in desperate need! Needless to say the journey home was a bit smellier than earlier!
Road Trip home was fairly quiet – except that I had to drop off a stripper in Glasgow!!! (That’s got your attention!! Eh!) it’s true!
Highlights of our Road Trip were – MILLIONAIRES SHORTBREAD! And of course our new players Kamilla and Katie playing outstanding volleyball on their debut performances! Katie got at least one of those blocks I mentioned earlier and Kamilla had some excellent hits from 4!
Maybe we’ll sing next week??!!
