the volleyball ladies 06/07

Name

Rachel Nicol

Position  4/OS/S/M/L
About the Player  Rachel is unique in being the only member of the ladies team brave enough to speak back to Dave (coach) – voicing the unspoken thoughts of the masses/a prime number nearing twenty. She is always eager to get started at training – occasionally before Dave stops talking. Rachel flies eagerly round the court despite her injured shoulder, a real all-rounder, and on top of this regularly journalises for the team, writing stunningly enjoyable match reports. A teetotaler, Rachel would never be found having a drink or two after a game…never!

Name

Glenda Mascall

Position  4/OS
About the Player  Glenda, our rock! Hit her with anything and she will definitely make sure that the balls go up, and over if set out to her powerful left arm. Every Thursday she drives up from the borders to train with the rest of the gang. She also gets us to games safely in her Glenda-bus. When she is not on court she spends time with the family and on a Sunday you might find her in IKEA buying glasses. A wonder(Glenda)ful and reliable four player and person. As we say, when Glenda is in the house you won’t feel sad! top

Name

Emma Mickley

Position  OS/S
About the Player What she lacks in height she cetainly makes up for in....... Noise!  Yep Emma is the self confessed loudest member of the team.  Playing Off Setter / Setter there is certainly no questioning when Emma is in the hall!  Emma specialises in throwing herself around the court in spectacular fashion (to get the ball of course) and man you should hear her celebrate when she gets a block (who says you have to be tall to block)!!  Also the team secretary she has the added stress of ensuring that we all know when and where we are playing (a tough job given the dizzyness of some of some of the team), and feeding us up on Malt loaf before a long journey to away games

Name

 Hannah Steele

Position  Setter
About the Player  Hannah - she loves sparkly clothes and shoes but keep her away from the sparkly wine (and tequila, vodka, cocktails of any type......).  Just like her horse, Storm, she's also a stubborn young/old (delete as appropriate to your age) mule and will only walk on the black stripes on zebra crossings.  Oh yes, and she's our setter, the playmaker & all round conductor of the team, although sometimes she's singing a different song to us all........ top

Name

Elin Kallstad - off to China for a year!

Position  3
About the Player Five years ago, this 5 foot 7 tall Swede arrived in Edinburgh for the first time and she hasn't left since. Three years ago she realised that she missed volleyball and joined NUVOC. (The best club name she had ever heard.) 8-5 every day of the week she works for a Swedish rubber company as a customer service team leader. NO, not that kind of rubber! Anti-vibration systems. NO, not that kind! For trains and trucks and the likes. When not at work or on the volleyball court she loves to read books, dance to indie music and talk.... yes to anyone who wants to listen basically. Her favourite colour is blue and she thinks that the best thing that came out of Scotland is Ewan McGregor. Elin plays though the middle and is determined to block more and better than ever this season! top

Name

Zalina Dzhatieva - off to Oban for a year!

Position  4
About the Player  Sent ‘From Russia with Love’ 5 years ago our very own Zalina arrived in Scotland. Hailing from the Soviet Union Zalina is an experienced volleyball player who was also an Olympic Gymnast in a previous life going by the amount of tumbling she does on court. Her favourite shot is to do a rolling hit into the middle of the court before squealing in delight at another point won! She travels with her own entourage (Alik and Mum) to both home and away matches and is an enthusiastic member of the team. A force to be reckoned with at all times.

Name

 Jo Lapsley

Position  3/4
About the Player  I have played for Falkirk VBC since I was at school but gave up at 18 to get drunk at University !  Joined Jets in 2004 to revive my career, but found it wasn't my kinda club and saw the Light (praise the Lord !) at NUVOC.  I am otherwise known as "Big Gin Jo" cos of my affinity for vodka.  I have a serious allergy to peanuts, so have to watch my nuts (and those of the Mens team too!). top

Name

Dianne Ferry

Position M/4
About the Player  top

Name

Kamilla Haba

Position S/OS/4
About the Player  Kamila is a personal trainer in the gym. She is good in every activity she does. She can set, she can hit, she can pick-up the impossible ball almost from the floor and be careful, as she can strike hard and doesn’t matter if you are her opponent or her team-mate in training. You should be ready! top

Name

Lucie Komroskova - she's gone back to Czec

Position 4
About the Player  If you think after many years of playing volleyball that you know how to jump when you spike, then come and see Lucie. The team likes to call Lucie ‘The Jumper’ not only because she can spike the ball from higher than the block but she used to be a long jumper at the beginning of her sporting career. Now as Lucie has changed to volleyball we have got a chance to admire not only her athletic technique but her personality as an extremely responsible and reliable team player. top

Name

Roxanna Hunter - moving back to the States

Position  OS
About the Player  Roxanna is our bubbly Californian blonde. She has settled in Edinburgh with her Scottish husband. If not spiking the ball in the volleyball court she is living it up on the slopes snowboarding and mountain biking. She also loves pilates and yoga when her schedule allows. top

Name

Katie Hanson - she's off too!

PositionM

About the Player top

Name

Fay Morrice

Position M/4
About the Player   Our youngest player is only sweet sixteen. She moved up from the Juniors last year and is hitting the poor ball hard from all positions. She will surely be heard of in the future of Scottish volleyball. top

Name

Rona McIntosh

PositionS
About the Player  Rona, where do I start with Rona?! When I first met Rona - she could not be any nicer! She was bubbly and couldn't stop talking - you barely could get a word in edgeways! She is easy to talk to and will make anyone smile and laugh. If she wasn't actually playing, you could always rely on her to be a very good cheer-leader and encourage her team-mates from the side of the court. Overall, she is an easy-going person and fun to be around. top

Name

Lucy Wallace

PositionM
About the Player  Born and raised by meerkats on the Serengeti.  I left the safety of the burrow at the age of two and ended up in the cold of the Antarctic, it was here that I developed my joy of ball sports.  Me and my penguin brethren would go out and have snow ball fights (when the weather allowed), and it was during one of these joyous events that we discovered the game of volleythesnowball - which is not an easy thing to do!!  After a while my penguin friends realised that I had a natural aptitude for the sport and suggested that I move to bonny Scotland to play for NUVOC! top

Name

Wendy Cruikshank

PositionUtility
About the Player Wendy ‘is it time for a game yet?’ Cruickshank is an all rounder in the women’s team.  She can play any position that is asked of her effectively….even without a warm up!  She is a very motivational team player and adds a great sense of fun to any training session. top

Name

Emma Dow

Position4
About the Player  top

Name

Stephanie Boashung

PositionM
About the Player  top

Name

Dave Stoddart

Position Coach
About the Coach  At last the Ol’ Kinky Boots has hung up his trainers for good – P1 no more! He said the reason was a recurring injury but we all know it was old age catching up with him! Now he is concentrating on the Laydees with sometimes as many as 18 to contend with & loving every minute of it! He pretends not to hear the graphic tales of double touch etc (& that’s not them setting the ball!) but really is all ears. So “Come On The Stod” – you’ve a job made in heaven! top
